The Glow Stick Lighthouse

Day 1:  Wally and I started off our vacation with a six hour build-up of a 6-foot Lighthouse. Folks began to pour out of the condos to come down and see what we were doing. It was great to be back on the beach again, to feel that wonderful sand between your toes.

Construction began: hauling water from the Atlantic, shoveling sand into forms.
As we began forming the top, I dropped in two yellow glow sticks with the thought that when night descended, we’d have a cool little glowing top. Of course, the thought also crossed my mind that this may make it a prime target for those “night-stalkers” of sandcastles. You know, the ones that under the cover of night, sneak down and smash them to nothingness. Well, apparently I was right. For, come morning light, our first sculpture had been decimated.

The saddest part of the destruction?  Someone from our vacation condo (The Dolphin Beach Club) overheard an exchange between a young daughter and mother as they stood next to our lighthouse. It went something like this:

Little Girl: “I want to knock the sandcastle down, Mommy.”
“Ok, dear.”

So, the Little girl throws herself at the 1000+ lbs of sculptured sand. And not too surprisingly, she doesn't make much headway
“I can’t knock it down, Mommy.”
“Oh, that’s ok,” says mom. “I’ll knock it down for you.”
And she did.

Whatever happened to appreciation of artwork?
