The Thomas Pointe Shoals, MD Lighthouse

Day two… both Wally and I headed to the local Flea Market with our families. (On the shopping list: more C-clamps. You can never have enough!). On the way in, we stopped to see the last sand sculptures that were done by Mark Altamare before his death last year. (If you ever get to the Daytona Beach area, stop by the flea market to see them.) Mark’s last sculpture: Jesus bearing the cross, a look of anguish on His face. Inspiring, Mark. Great work.

Construction Time! Water that lighthouse!

Ron and Wally

Inside the flea market Wally spotted a booth selling lighthouses, and one in particular stood out. He bought it, and decided to use it as a model for our next lighthouse.

Why, if you look real careful, you can see it sitting at about the 6-1/2 foot level near Wally's right shoulder.

The tide looks like it's creeping close... and of course, it is. But the spot we picked out would not see any water. At least, not any 'tide' water.

During construction, one of Daytona’s talented lifeguards, Shawn, began to practice his martial art skills next to us during his lunch break. After our previous night’s destruction of the Glow Stick Lighthouse, I thought I’d ask him to pose with his sai – a protector of the sculpture! If only he’d been able to spend the night!

Wally and I don’t know if the little model fits the actual lighthouse in the looks department, but the sand sculpture sure turned out very nice. There was something very stately about it.

I love how the light comes in from the side.

John 8:12:  "I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Total height: 9 feet.

Total build time: 20 man hours, split over two days.

Total life of sculpture:  One day.

The next morning, the downed lighthouse showed signs of foul play. This one was really discouraging to lose. At 9-feet it was the largest I’d ever built (at the time).

Wally and I decided to take the next day off, to try and bolster our spirits some.
