La Jolla Shores, California

July 6, 2003

My family and I recently had a wonderful opportunity to visit California (thanks again, Mom. Everything was super!) So, since California has beaches... I just had to show my Mom how much fun I have in the sand. So, after packing a suitcase full of tools and forms, (and clothes too, of course) we headed off to California. Once I arrived, I placed a quick call to a local sand sculptor (Thank you Mr. Stewart of OB) and soon I was armed with some essential knowledge of the San Diego beaches.

One of the new obstacles? Seaweed. Seems that a fingernail clipper or small pair of scissors is quite handy for removing those pesky strands of Pacific debris. Sure enough, it’s much easier to clip the seaweed than it is to pull it out of the sculpture and risk damage.

I also found it quite interesting that the number one asked question of me (and it seems I was asked this every 15 minutes or so) was, “How long did it take to build?”  That’s a question I’m seldom asked on the East coast. Perhaps this gives a little insight into the Californian mind? Hmmm. A point to ponder.

To those of you who I chatted with along that seaweed strew coast, thanks for stopping by. And to the young men who were captivated with my tales of "sand guitars"… head over to my 'Carrying a Tune' sculpture for the close up shots.

 Hey, there's my Mom!

La Jolla Shores. Definitely a place I’d like to visit again.
