Mofest 2003
Hutchinson Island, FL
On the day after my birthday I found myself down at the Holiday Inn
Oceanside located at Jenson Beach, Florida. |
 |
The planned event was to introduce a group of around
seventy (ranging in age from 1 to 70) to the joys of Sandsculpting. The Pound-up
commenced around 9 am, with me laying out forms and grabbing a shovel. As my
shovel bit into the sand, I was quick to observe one key fact:
Where was everybody?!

Not to worry. Helpers wandered in and out. Some were part
of Mofest, while others just happened to be on the beach that day. (A very
special thanks to the two teens from the Assemblies of God group (dudes, you can
move some sand!) and to brothers Daniel and Leo who just kept the water flowing,
and the sand moving. Mas Arena, Senors!). Mofest member, Samantha also
lent a hand, acting as my “sand stomper” as the mound grew higher and
higher.

The group calling themselves Mofest descended on the
beach for the 1 pm carving date. The coordinator, Eileen, gave me an
introduction worthy of royalty. Why, among laughter, someone even yelled
from the back of the crowd, “What are you… his agent?”
(Hmmm. An agent. Maybe I should look into that. Ha ha.)
I explained some of the more common questions that I’m asked
during a carve, and demonstrated some of the tools. Then, it was time to
check with the coordinator. Eileen explained the strategy:
“We’ll have six teams, and each team will have five minutes to
carve on the sculpture. Then, we’ll move in the next team. And the next
team. Oh, and you’ll judge their carving ability between rounds.” |
 |
|
Oh boy. The same sculpture? Yep. The pressure’s on
now! The later groups obviously had an advantage, as they would lean over
and watch the happenings of the previous group. Admittedly, the castle
turned out much different than I would have originally carved it, but that
also gave it a great personality. There were elements to it (how could it
not, with so many different ideas going on) that I really had to admire.
(I still love the ladder leading to a window. So clever!)

With the “competition” over, the group moved onto a
boogie board competition. I did some clean up, and added some staircases. Then
took a group shot of those still in the area.

Thanks Mofest, for an enjoyable day.
