Siesta Key, Florida
What do you do when you walk onto an "alien" beach with an impending sunset? And it just happens to turn out to have awesome sand? You hustle!
Little did I know when I visited Siesta Key (Just outside of Sarasota, FL) that I would encounter some of the most beautiful sand this side of Fort Myers. Powerdery… Packable…. Carvable…. Why didn't I come here earlier in the day? Well, part of the reason was my niece Kellie was celebrating her recent graduation, and at the same time, I was celebrating my 18th wedding anniversary. Two very worthy occasions. Talk about a packed weekend.

So… there we all are. Walking onto the beach at 6:45 pm, lugging my plastic forms, shovels and tools…. And the sun is sinking fast.
With my brother-in-law Ty Adkins on shovel, and me on the water buckets, we jumped into action, amid curious looks from nearby onlookers. With sand stacked and packed I figured I had an hour…. Maybe less. (Boy, time goes by fast when you're playing in the sand.)

I was kept in close company by two friendly families and a kind man from Hungary. Questions were flying left and right (especially from the inquisitive children who seemed mesmerized by what I was making) - and I carved as quick as I could, with a gentle breeze off the gulf cooling the land. What a beautiful moment!
Photos were taken. Including a nice shot of all the kids holding sand tools. ("Look what we made!" Ha ha.) And the one young lady who posed hopping for a good grade on her upcoming school project. I love it.

Before I knew it, everyone along the beach stood up to watch the sun plunge behind the waves. Try as I could to get a picture of the sun appearing beneath the "arch", someone would always get in the way. Oh well. It was time to stop carving and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Siesta Key will need to be re-visited. And next time, I'll spend more time.
